Knee replacement surgery in Belgium

Mrs JM, aged 70 from Teignmouth, Devon, was having difficulty walking and had already waited considerable time for diagnosis.  She was devastated to be told there was a ten month waiting list for knee replacement surgery on the NHS so she looked into having surgery in Belgium. 

 

Mrs. JM said: “It took all our savings but I couldn’t have afforded the operation privately in the UK”.  She had been quoted around £10,300 for this operation in the UK but with Direct Healthcare knee replacement surgery costs £6,500 which is significantly cheaper.  She and her husband stayed in guest accommodation at the hospital in West Flanders where the surgery was carried out (the double room cost £30 per night, over eleven nights).

 

“Everything went so smoothly. We were picked up by car at the airport and driven to the hospital. The doctors, nurses and physiotherapist were lovely and the hospital was very clean. There was no language problem as people spoke English with us”.  Two months after her operation Mrs JM was able to go out walking with her family again and although Mrs. JM couldn’t get physiotherapy immediately she continued with the exercises the Belgian physiotherapist had taught her so when she finally saw a Devon physiotherapist she only needed to have three sessions.
