Obesity and weight loss treatments at Marbella Surgery
Studies demonstrate that most patients who have tried various diets ended up heavier than their original weight only a few weeks after abandoning the diet. At Marbella Surgery they don’t like to speak about ‘diets’ but rather eating and lifestyle modification and re- education. Only through a completely personalised approach and with the right psychological support a patient can have the sufficient motivation to achieve long-standing results.
Mr Carlos Molina is pioneer in Spain with the intra gastric balloon. This is essentially a silastic balloon, which is inserted into the stomach through the mouth and filled with sterile saline. There is no surgery or general anaesthetic involved, so you will be able to leave the clinic soon alter the procedure. It is useful only in moderate obesity, as it needs to be removed after 6 months.
The Spatz™ Balloon System has an innovative valve, allowing the balloon volume to be adjusted in the patient’s stomach via a routine endoscopy procedure, it can stay in the stomach for 12 months as opposed to the traditional intra-gastric balloon which stays for 6 months. The adjustments are performed through and an endoscopic procedure. These adjustments are important: in case of intolerance to the balloon (it can be deflated) or loss of the effect of the balloon (it can be inflated with a larger volume).
The gastric band, lapband or laparoscopic adjustable gastric band (LAGB) is a silastic band which is placed around the upper part of your stomach, like a belt. It has become the number one choice in many countries such as Australia or the USA because of its safety, simplicity and effectiveness. A properly placed and adjusted band is, by a long way, the safest, simplest and one of the most effective operations with better results in the long term than other more aggressive operations such as the gastric by-pass, or the gastric sleeve.
Gastric plication
Plication is a simple and safe weight loss surgical procedure. It works by reducing the capacity of the stomach through longitudinal folding but without actually removing or cutting any part of the stomach. The main benefits are that there is no need to cut or staple either the stomach or the intestine, making it much safer than the 'gastric sleeve' or the 'gastric bypass' and there is no need for future adjustments or fills as with the gastric band. It’s a reversible surgery, the stomach is folded, not removed. The percentage of complications is significantly lower than with the gastric sleeve. It produces an excess weight loss from 60 to 65 percent after 2 years.
Gastric Pacemaker (Abiliti™)
This is the latest minimally invasive development in the treatment of obesity. The abiliti system consists of a stimulator (a small battery-powered device similar to a cardiac pacemaker) and a lead containing a stimulation electrode and food sensor.
The procedure is done through laparoscopic surgery. The surgeon inserts the lead containing the sensor and the stimulating electrode into your stomach. The procedure involves no intestinal rerouting or stapling of the stomach. The only elements left inside the abdomen are the sensor and stimulating leads, the battery is placed underneath the skin. The surgery is very safe because the anatomy of the digestive tract is unchanged, and the procedure is very easily reversed. In most cases, the procedure takes less than an hour, during which time you will be asleep and you can go home after a few hours. There is no need to stay in hospital overnight.
The abiliti system works by helping you to control your appetite, and automatically recording when you eat, drink, and exercise. In addition, patients have access to a social support network.
After you eat something, the food detection sensor signals the gastric stimulator. The stimulator then sends low energy electrical impulses to the stimulation electrode, making you feel full before you normally would, so you eat less. The activity sensor, contained in the stimulator, tracks your exercise, activity and sedentary periods.
Information from the food and activity sensors can be wirelessly sent to a laptop computer for you and your surgeon or physician to review.
This enables you to easily monitor your eating and exercise patterns, track your progress, spot trends, and identify areas that need special attention.
