Barbados promoting niche health tourism

With visitor arrivals and spending down in Barbados, holiday promoters are highlighting the island's lesser-known attractions of health tourism. This includes medical services for people needing kidney treatment, as well as services for infertile women.

Sue Springer of the Barbados Hotel & Tourism Association (BHTA), points out that in both cases Barbados has excellent facilities. “  Barbados is the place to come when people with kidney problems want to have a holiday without worrying about whether treatment will be available. We have good dialysis equipment here and dialysis service. These people who have to use dialysis, you know they have to do it regularly, so if they want to come here and stay for two weeks, they will have a challenge if people can't deal with them. And they bring their family with them, so you know this is niche marketing. It may only be small but these sorts of things grow because, unfortunately, there are a lot of people nowadays, for whatever reasons, who have to have these types of treatment."

Springer also said that the offer of fertility services is an area where Barbados is making a name for itself. Dr Juliet Skinner, a consultant gynaecologist runs the Barbados Fertility Centre. “She has developed this clinic that has got international rating and she is getting people coming here to have treatment and to have wonderful babies. People are coming from all over the world  from Australia, Canada, Britain and Europe.”
