Malta: quality specialist and cosmetic surgery

Travel for treatment

Why is the small island of Malta becoming an increasingly popular destination for health tourism?

Imagine, for a moment, that you are among the growing number of people in Britain who is considering a trip abroad for medical treatment, whether for a specialist operation such as a hip replacement, or perhaps for cosmetic surgery or dental work. What would you look for from among the vast number of global destinations now offering medical treatments?

If your priorities are uncompromising quality of medical care and complete confidence in the treatment outcome, in an environment that feels safe and familiar, then you too would be among those now considering Malta as their destination of choice.

UK-qualified surgeons

Malta’s medical consultants are all highly qualified and experienced surgeons. Most are members of the UK General Medical Council, are listed on the UK Specialist Register, and have gained their post graduate qualifications in the UK. Malta’s close ties with Britain enable before- and aftercare treatment, so where appropriate, we can arrange initial treatment consultations to be carried out in Britain, either by a private consultant, or by your own GP.

You can also rest assured that we won’t send you home until both you, and our medical staff, are satisfied that you’re ready to travel, and if this requires a few more days in hospital than expected, it won’t cost a penny more. Our prices are always fully inclusive, with no ‘extra’ costs added on.

Another important legacy of Malta’s time as a British colony is that the Maltese speak fluent English, so communication is easy with all our medical staff, including of course our nurses and physiotherapists, who play such an important part in any recovery process.

State-of-the-art facilities

Malta’s two state-of-the-art private hospitals, St James and St Philip’s, specialise in all forms of surgery – including open heart surgery, hip and knee operations, ophthalmic and cosmetic surgery –and their medical standards are on a par with those in the UK private sector.

The island has invested substantially in healthcare. How many hospitals, for instance, can claim to have been free from MRSA, a superbug that is not only a potential killer, but can wreak havoc in any joint replacement procedure?

Our hospitals also implant the best prosthesis available, providing a longer lifespan than the cheaper implants so often used elsewhere. This focus on quality permeates through each layer of our healthcare service.  In fact, Malta’s health service was recently ranked among the top five in the world by the World Health Organization.

A centuries-long tradition of healthcare

It’s partly due to Malta’s ancient ties with medical practitioners that the island now has such an advanced healthcare system. Our small nation has been treating patients since the Hospitaller Knights of St John built their first hospital on the island back in 1530. Their facilities soon ranked among the most renowned in Europe.  When the Knights left the island their legacy was kept alive by the British military authorities, earning Malta the name ‘The Nurse of the Mediterranean’ in the First World War for its medical care of allied troops. Following independence, our country has continued to provide first-class healthcare both for holidaymakers who need medical treatment and now for health tourists.

Just a short flight away

Malta is just a three-hour flight from Britain, and for most of the year this beautiful island, with its enticing Mediterranean sea and its rich history, is bathed in sunshine. It has been a popular destination for holidaymakers for many years. Now it is proving a safe and attractive haven for health tourists with a wide choice of very affordable hotels and holiday activities for family members.

Because Malta provides quality healthcare you won’t find us offering the cheapest prices on the market. But our surgical procedures are still 30% cheaper than in the UK, and dental work is significantly lower.

Attractive healthcare investment opportunities

As more and more UK citizens are seeking treatment abroad, the Maltese Government is keen to build on the excellent infrastructure that exists.  With expansion in capacity, economies of scale will bring about price reductions without forfeiting quality.  The incentives available to investors may not be bettered by any other EU Member State.
