Eye surgery abroad in Spain: Treatments offered

Refractive surgery in Spain

Blurred vision is usually caused by refractive problems, and there are three main types of refractive errors:

  1. Myopia: The image is focused in front of the retina.

  2. Hyperopia: The image is focused behind the retina.

  3. Astigmatism: The image is more of a focal point.

Refractive surgery can correct vision in the entire visual field without the need for glasses or contact lenses, and is an permanent correction of refractive errors. It is suitable for patients who do not want to wear glasses or contact lenses, and patients can have a range of mild, moderate or high refractive problems for surgery to be suitable.

Cataract surgery (Phacoemulsification) in Spain

Nebro - Eye exam

A cataract is a total or partial opacification (clouding) of the lens.
There are basically two types:

Congenital cataract: caused by the existence of a hereditary injury or assault on the embryo during development.

Acquired cataract: is the most common type and is the leading cause of vision loss among people over 55 years. It is caused by the accumulation of dead cells in the natural lens of the eye which is responsible for focusing light and producing clear, sharp images.

Phacoemulsification surgery involves the removal of the opaque or clouded lenses and placing an intraocular lens to compensate for the loss of power of eye refraction. The corneal incising is 2.7mm to 3mm long using the conventional technique or about 2.2mm long in the MICS technique for cataract removal.

Glaucoma surgery in Spain

Glaucoma is an eye disease that is degenerative neuropathy of the optic nerve fibres. One of the main factors that can lead to glaucoma is elevated intraocular pressure. Untreated glaucoma leads to irreversible optic nerve damage, with destruction of the nerve and the consequent loss of sight, and partial or total blindness.

Laser trabeculoplasty is used to treat open-angle glaucoma. An argon orNd:YAG laser is use on the trabecular meshwork to stimulate opening of the tubes and thus increase the flow of aqueous fluid.

Laser peripheral iridectomy used in patients with angle-closure glaucoma. The laser points to the iris to make an overture to it. This opens a new avenue through which fluid can pass when the dilated pupil is blocked.

Retina Vitreous treatment in Spain

Nebro - Eye surgery

The retina is the sensory organ of the eye where images are projected, collected and processed in a nerve impulse that goes through the optic nerve. The vitreous is a transparent viscous gel that is in contact with the retina.

There are many diseases that affect the vitreous, and the most common symptoms are the appearance of floaters, shadows or glare and blurred vision and distortion or metamorphosis. All these symptoms may indicate the presence of vitreoretinal disease.

Sometimes the symptoms may be temporary and improve over time (eg vitreous detachments of age). In other cases, systemic treatment is needed or intraocular. Also laser photocoagulation retinal tears can be treated in the absence of retinal detachment.

Lazy Eye treatment in Spain

Amblyopia or lazy eye is the restriction of vision, usually affecting one eye, but sometimes refractive defects exist in both eyes. Amblyopia occurs because the brain cells responsible for vision in that eye will not develop for lack of use. Most cases are caused by visual defects (myopia, astigmatism, and farsightedness that have not been detected or corrected in childhood.

For an early recovery, the ophthalmologist or optometrist with a patch covering the eye with good vision, and indicate the necessary correction. Monitoring in such cases must be extreme and careful, trying to engage the treatment to the needs of each patient.

Early diagnosis is always valuable and parents, teachers, pediatricians, optometrists, orthoptists, ophthalmologists, pediatric ophthalmologists and strabismus should help in the early detection. Treatment should start as soon as possible, preferably before 4 years of age.
