Previously known as Formosa (meaning 'beautiful island'), Taiwan is situated to the north of the Philippines and about 112 miles off the southeastern coast of mainland China. This large, mountainous island straddles the Tropic of Cancer and was acquired by the Republic of China from the Japanese in 1945, since when its rapid economic growth has transformed it into an advanced economy as one of the four 'Asian Tigers' (along with Singapore, Hong Kong and South Korea).

Taiwan is well-positioned to compete with other Asian countries in promoting surgery and medical services to foreigners, on account of its advanced medical technology and highly qualified doctors. Taiwan has enormous potential for medical tourism because of its outstanding heallthcare facilities, with medical costs that are much cheaper than those in Western countries.
