Travel and accommodation in Spain

Major improvements have been made to road travel and intercity rail in Spain following Expo 92 in Seville and the Olympic Games in Barcelona and there is a huge choice of airlines flying to Spain from the UK.  Many of the private cosmetic surgery clinics and hospitals are located in the Costa del Sol region (nearest airport Málaga) and Barcelona, which are two of the country’s busiest airports greeting large amounts of holiday-makers each year. 

Fortunately, this means that there are a high number of low cost flight deals from budget airlines to be had while traditional airlines such as Iberia and British Airways also offer reasonable return flight deals.  See the following list of airlines covering these cities.  More information about flights to Spain can be found at the Spanish Airport Authority web site.

Flying to Barcelona

Barcelona’s airport is called El Prat (www.barcelona-airport.com) and is located 12 km from the city centre.  International flights arrive and depart at Terminal A and trains leave for Plaça de Catalunya every thirty minutes.  There is also a shuttle bus (Aerobús) which goes every 15 minutes to Plaça de Catalunya while a taxi to the town centre will cost approximately €20. 

British Airways flies from London Heathrow to Barcelona four times a day with return fares from £106 inclusive.

EasyJet flies to Barcelona from London Gatwick three return flights daily, London Luton three return flights daily, London Stansted two return flights daily, Bristol one return flight daily, Newcastle one return flight daily and Liverpool two return flights daily.  Prices are from £29.99 one-way, including taxes. Iberia also has reduced fares from Heathrow, Gatwick and Manchester.

Flying to Málaga

Málaga Airport is eight km west of the city of Málaga and is main flight path for people visiting the Costa del Sol. The airport is next to the main A7 coast road that links to the AP7 Autopista del Sol motorway for Torremolinos, Benalmadena, Fuengirola and Marbella with Gibraltar to the west and Málaga, Nerja and Granada to the East.  Over the years Málaga airport has grown considerably and due to the large influx of travellers each year further expansion plans continue.  Telephone + 34 95 204 88 38. 

There is a half hour train journey to the centre of Málaga every 15-20 minutes from outside the main terminal, which costs approximately €3 - but ensure you buy your ticket before the journey or you risk being fined.  There is also a train to Fuengirola and a half hour airport bus from outside the arrivals hall into the centre of Málaga.  A taxi into town from the airport will cost around €20.

Rail travel

RENFE is Spain’s national state railway which has excellent intercity services.  If you’re not keen on flying to Spain there are several routes from France such as Paris to Barcelona via Hendaye and San Sebastian or Paris to Barcelona via Portbou.  It’s worth noting that a sleeper train from Paris will take you directly to your destination without having to change. 

Trains from London reach Barcelona via Cerbère where there are connections with Talgo, the fast intercity trains and long distance services to Málaga, Seville and Madrid. Alternatively you can drive to Spain via the French motorways, across the Pyrenées passing Portbou in the east.  If you plan to hire a car on arrival, there are many car hire desks at airport arrivals.

Accommodation

As for accommodation a typical double en-suite room in a three star hotel in Málaga will cost between €90 and €115 including breakfast (quoting low/high season respectively), and €120 to €150 for a four star.  In Marbella a three star double en-suite room costs from €55 to €90, (quoting low/high season respectively) and a four star costs €200 including breakfast.  In Barcelona a double en-suite room with breakfast in a three star hotel will cost from around €170 to €200 and for a four star for approximately €230.
