Doctor accreditation (orthopaedic surgeons)
Medical training in Portugal takes a total of six years, after which students must serve as an intern before becoming registered. The Ordem dos Medicos (Portuguese Medical Association) oversees the training and registration of doctors.
Qualifying students are awarded a Carta de curso de licenciatura em medicina (diploma confirming the completion of medical studies) by their university and a Certificado emitido pela Ordem dos Médicos (certificate confirming the completion of general internship) by the hospital of their internship.
Orthopaedic surgeons are able to offer hip and knee replacements and other surgical procedures. Specialist training takes at least a further three years and there is great competition for places. This means that Portuguese specialists represent the very best of the best when it comes to medical practice.
Cosmetic surgeon accreditation
Sociedade Portuguesa de Cirurgia Plástica Reconstrutiva e Estética (SPCPRE) (the Portuguese Society for Plastic Reconstructive & Aesthetic Surgery) is the industry association for plastic surgeons in Portugal and will be able to advise you on the qualifications and suitability of your chosen surgeon.
Dentist accreditation
Dental education and practice in Portugal is overseen by the Ordem dos Médicos Dentistas (OMD) (Portuguese Dental Association), to which all dentists must belong. The main qualification for dentists in Portugal is the Carta de curso de licenciatura em medicina dentaria (diploma conferring official recognition of completion of studies in dentistry) issued by the OMD.
Dentists who have undergone further specialist training in either orthodontics or oral surgery, are awarded the title of Especialista em Ortodontia (Orthodontic Specialist) or Especialista em Cirurgia Oral (Oral Surgery Specialist).
It is worth noting that older dentists, who qualified prior to EU membership in 1986, may not hold these qualifications and may actually be qualified as doctors specialising in Stomatology.
