Doctor accreditation in Bulgaria

Doctor accreditation (orthopaedic surgeons)

Medical training in Bulgaria consists of a course lasting 6 to 6 ½  years at one of the five main Bulgarian medical schools at Sofia, Pleven, Trakia, Plovdiv or Varna. In contrast to many Bulgarian educational establishments, these schools are well equipped and the courses are taught by experienced and highly qualified staff.

About 90% of doctors in Bulgaria are registered with the National Insurance Fund, although this is not compulsory, particularly in private practice. However, you should ensure that your surgeon holds a "Master in Medicine" degree and the professional qualification of "Master physician" from one of the five Bulgarian medical schools, or the equivalent qualification from overseas. For orthopaedic surgery such as hip or knee replacement, it is reasonable to ask about the specific orthopaedic experience of the surgeons available.

Cosmetic Surgeon accreditation

The main training centres for cosmetic surgeons in Bulgaria are the Clinic for Burns and Plastic Surgery in Plovdiv and the Clinic for Plastic Surgery in Sofia.

Cosmetic surgeons in Bulgaria should hold membership of one or more of the national or European bodies that monitor and promote best practice. The national body for Bulgaria is BULPRAS – the Bulgarian Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery, while the main European body is EPRAS – the European Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery. Either of these bodies will be able to help you find a suitable surgeon and confirm their qualification to undertake the work you require.

Dentist accreditation

The three main training centres for dentists in Bulgaria are based at the medical universities in Sofia, Plovdiv and Varna, and the primary qualification for dentists in Bulgaria is “Physician of Dental Medicine with a Master Degree”. The undergraduate course lasts for 5 ½ years and was fully EU compliant on Bulgarian accession to the EU in 2007. Specialist dental training in Bulgaria lasts for a further 3 years, leading to the title “Specialist in Orthodontics” or “Specialist in Oral surgery”.

Continuing education is mandatory for all dentists, with a credit that ensures that all dentists undertake a set amount of training within each 3 year period.

Dental standards are monitored and maintained by the Bulgarian Dental Association.  With 100% membership, they can advise you on the qualifications and suitability of any registered Bulgarian dentist.
