Dentists in India: Accreditation and qualifications

There are over 40,000 dentists in India, regulated by the Indian Dental Association. The IDA has 29 state branches and 290 local branches.

Indian Dental Training is regulated by the Dental Council of India. Training takes 4 years leading to the qualification of Bachelor in Dental Surgery (BDS). This must be followed by a one year internship before an Indian dentist is licensed to practice.

Further study and research can then be undertaken, leading to a higher qualification of Masters in Dental Surgery (MDS).
