Doctors study at the Faculty of Medicine at
Cairo University, which is the same graduate course that medical students in the UK follow, and takes six years to complete. Before the Diploma in Surgery can be taken the doctor needs to have two to three years experience in surgery after the initial basic house officer training. Prior to the MD Surgery qualification the doctor needs five to six years specialist training in plastic and reconstructive surgery.
Although the Egyptian plastic surgeons follow a similar training program to those in the UK, the plastic surgeons in Egypt gain more experience with surgical procedures not commonly done in the NHS, such as face lift and new cosmetic techniques like endoscopic surgery for the endoscopic brow lift.
The Diploma and MD are similar to the FRCS (1) and FRCS (2) in the UK with clinical specialisation taking place after completion of FRCS part 1. In Egypt the second part of the qualification is now specialised and MD Plastic Surgery in Egypt is the equivalent to the UK qualification of FRCS (plast).
