Mr Reeves of England has submitted details of his experience of having a tummy tuck in Belgium at Singelberg Clinic.
To any of you who may be considering going abroad to have a cosmetic procedure, I would like to tell you about my experience.
I am a 54 year old male who lost 10.5 stone (147lb 0r 70kg) and found myself with an unwanted excess of sagging skin in various areas.
I had a consultation with a BMI specialist in England and was told what was required, this would cost me approx £10,500.00 just for a Tummy Tuck. I went to my local GP and said I was considering going abroad, they were very supportive and said they would look after me when I returned should I need it, so feeling less apprehensive I set about finding a reputable surgeon abroad.
After days of trolling through various surgeons and clinics, I finally came up with Dr Oelbrandt in Belgium. So I rang up and booked an appointment in London.
The day arrived and I went off to see him. He was very professional and knowledgeable, he confirmed what the BMI surgeon had said, which made me realise that he cared about what he was doing, and was not out to try and rip me off. The price he quoted me was £5,800.00, this was not only for a Tummy Tuck but included to have a Breast reduction, Neck and chin lift and a couple of moles removed just for good measure.
The day arrived and my wife and I went up to Ebbsfleet and got on the Eurostar, this was a very easy journey all the way to Bornem, (although I would recommend that you get a Taxi from Bornem to the Eurostar on your return journey, as there is no lift to the platforms in Belgium and my poor wife would have to carry the case, this cost 45 euro and was well worth it).
We stayed at the recommended hotels which were excellent and the food was delightful. The staff were very helpful and all spoke English (as did all the staff in the hospital).
The next morning after receiving a text from Dr Oelbrandt telling me I would be the first operation, we went to St Josephs which is only a 5 min walk and booked in, this was very easy as they are very used to having English patients there. We were shown to the room which was very clean and tidy with a T.V. and en-suite, (no charge for the T.V. which had many English channels). I had a check over and was given my own digital thermometer to keep so I could check my temperature if required, and given a gown to change into. My wife was told she could stay there as long as she liked.
The operation went very well and when I came round the nurses were all very helpful and attentive, telling me not to hesitate and ring the buzzer should I require any assistance, I stayed in the hospital for two nights which was very comfortable and had very good food, and my wife was allowed to stay as long as she wanted. Before I left the hospital I was given a prescription which I collected from the chemist on our walk back to the hotel (which was no trouble at all). I would suggest some loose fitting trousers for the walk back to the hotel as it made it easy to put the wound drain in the pocket.
The next couple of days were fine with the pain killers I was given In was easily able to cope with the pain, (which was not very much at all). Each day we went for a walk and were able to eat out at the local restaurants, which were excellent and all made you feel welcome. Dr Oelbrandt kept in touch by text, then came to the hotel on the Sunday and removed my wound drain and redressed the wounds, by which time I was feeling fine and all was starting to heal well.
The next day we made the return journey back to Ebbsfleet, which I have to say I was a bit worried about, but this proved to be unfounded as it was no problem at all with no pain. When we got back to the car I was able to drive home with ease.
I am now four weeks postop and all is going fine, I returned to work ten days after the op with no problems at all, the scars are healing brilliantly and no one can believe how they have healed, even the nurse at my local GP who took out the stitches has asked for the details of where I had it done as she could not believe what a good job it was. Dr Oelbrandt has texted me a couple of times to make sure all is ok.
